Ever wanted to DJ? Did you know a knowledge of physics could help you?
Space Plasma Physicist and Kiss FM DJ Martin Archer takes you on a journey into sound with his virtual DJ booth, covering waves, frequency and other basic principles. Whilst spinning the latest tunes he explains the science behind the cueing, beat matching, blending and EQing that goes into his mixes in clubs. Along the way he’ll make a speaker out of a Styrofoam bowl, turn sound into fire and guide you fearlessly through uncharted frequency space, where you’ll discover some surprising connections to seemingly unrelated, cutting-edge physics research.
About Martin
Martin Archer is a DJ Physicist: By night he’s dropping the tunes on his national evening show on Kiss FM. By day he works at the world renowned Imperial College London as a PhD Space Physicist.
But how did Martin begin living such a dual life? It all started when he was studying for his Masters Degree in Physics and Theoretical Physics at Imperial. Martin was nominated in 2006 for the Best Male Presenter and in the Best Entertainment Programming categories at the Student Radio Awards for Radio 1. This spurred him on to achieve his dream job of presenting at the world famous Kiss.
However Martin still retained a real passion for Physics, which ultimately led to his return to academia. Determined to come up with fresh perspectives on how to communicate his love of science, especially to young audiences, he has worked on a number of exciting and unique projects.
Martin has combined his DJing and Physics backgrounds into a new live show on DJ Physics, a collaboration with the Royal Institution; he writes, produces and co-presents the Droppin’ Science podcast; and like a musical ninja he’s invented the gestural DJ performance which he’s dubbed WiiJing.
